2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees

Rock Hall The nine nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced. Here are the nominees:

  • Madonna
  • John Mellencamp
  • Beastie Boys
  • Donna Summer
  • Chic
  • Afrika Bambaataa
  • Leonard Cohen
  • The Dave Clark Five
  • The Ventures

The Associated Press says the diverse list shows how much the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has modified since its early days.
The nominations illustrate how far the Hall of Fame has stretched its definition of rock 'n' roll to incorporate a variety of musical styles.

It's certainly the case with Madonna, the Detroit-area native who burst out of New York dance clubs in the early 1980s with "Holiday" and soon became a pop culture icon. She scored 17 Top Ten hits in the 1980s alone and is due to put out an album next year, working with the likes of Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. The Beastie Boys molded punk rock and rap into the goofy hit "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right to Party." They became critical favorites and are still together, releasing an instrumental album this year.

Indiana’s own Mellencamp can fill a barrel with rock hits like "Hurts So Good," "Pink Houses" and "R.O.C.K. in the USA." Like Chic and the Dave Clark Five, he’s been nominated before without getting into the hall.
Last year the following artists were inducted into the Rock Hall.

  • Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
  • Patti Smith
  • R.E.M.
  • The Ronettes
  • Van Halen

  • Stephanie Dosen Writes Songs for Ghosts

Stephanie DosenArtist Stephanie Dosen writes songs for ghosts but people enjoy them as well. Dosen told The Age how she started as a songwriter but wound up on the stage.
Deciding "you only live once", Dosen threw herself into songwriting, which in turn led her to performing.

"I feel as if I've never really sought the stage but just ended up here. I think a lot of songwriters are, like me, just people who like to compose songs and aren't necessarily born for the stage," she says.

"It's the number one fear of people: getting up in front of an audience. People are more afraid of getting up on stage, talking in front of other people, than they are of death. Most people would rather die than do what I do."

After moving to London while making A Lily For the Spectre, Dosen ended up playing most every night. "It's like camping in your high heels," she says of touring.
Dosen's latest album is called A Lily for the Spectre. An entry on her Myspace page says the new album is filled with "driving cradlesongs for ghosts gone astray."
Stephanie Dosen was raised on a peacock farm in Wisconsin. One day while sifting through flotsam in the attic, she found an old guitar covered in dust. It was her secret prize. During the feather harvest, when everyone was busy, she would sneak up into the attic to compose songs for boys at school. She also wrote many lullabies for her two favorite pets, a swan and a fox.

Stephanie now writes mostly for ghosts with a rusty tape player named jean-pierre that follows her everywhere. He has made it through 7 states and 2 minor sets of injuries but still holds onto her twilight written songs with happiness. The influence of the nightly peacock mewing and swan swimming can still be heard in her music.

Her new record a lily for the spectre is filled with driving cradlesongs for ghosts gone astray. She has recently teamed horses with Simon Raymonde (Bella Union Records, Cocteau Twins) who blesses a lily for the spectre with bass and filigree sounds for lost peacocks.
Dosen looks kind of ghost-like in this music video for her song "Only Getting Better."

Starbucks Does Not Want DaVido's Java Jitter

DavidoStarbucks doesn't appear to be very interested in DaVido's "Java Jitter" song. He keeps getting thrown out of Starbucks despite his continuous attempts to sing his song "Java Jitter" inside them. He has been thrown out of 200 Starbucks already but doesn't appear to be ready to quit. DaVido's goal is to "have his CD on the Starbucks music racks next to superstars such as Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, and Ray Charles."

DaVido's website can be found at www.javajitter.com. He also has a MySpace page. Below is the Java Jitter video that contains DaVido's song and scenes of DaVido attempting to sing the "Java Jitter" inside various Starbucks locations.

    Girlfrenzy Postponed Until 2008

GirlfrenzyRight Arm Entertainment and Live Nation have postponed the first annual Girlfrenzy. The concert originally scheduled for Saturday, October 27 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA has been postponed until 2008. It is too bad because the concert had lined up some great female singers including Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne, Fiona Apple and Colbie Caillat.
Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne and Fiona Apple are among the artists who will perform Saturday, October 27 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA at the first annual day-long concert extravaganza of chart-topping female musicians and such up and coming female artists as red hot Colbie Caillat (whose single "Bubbly" is a smash pop radio hit) and iTunes sensation Sara Bareilles--both of whom hail from Los Angeles--as well as Antigone Rising. The festival is the brainchild of Right Arm Entertainment, who also produced the sold-out Rock On The Range Festival at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, among others. Look for the festival's promoters, Right Arm Entertainment and Live Nation, to announce more performers in the coming weeks for the inaugural event.
Future details about Girlfrenzy 2008 can be found on MySpace at www.myspace.com/girlfrenzy and the website at: www.girlfrenzyfestival.com. The website says refunds for the cancelled October 27th date are available at point of purchase.

Sony Says Single Plus Ringtone Equals Ringle

Reuters reports that the music industry plans to offer a new format called a ringle which will contain three songs (a hit, a remix and another track) plus a ringtone.
Each ringle is expected to contain three songs -- one hit and maybe one remix and an older track -- and one ringtone, on a CD with a slip-sleeve cover. The idea is that if consumers in the digital age can download any tracks they want individually, why not let them buy singles in the store as well? It also enables stores to get involved in the ringtone phenomenon.

Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which came up with the ringle idea, and Universal Music Group are going to be the first out of the box with ringles. The former will unleash 50 titles during October and November, while UMG will have anywhere from 10 to 20 titles ready. The Recording Industry Association of America has approved the "ringle" name, and there is an industrywide logo to help brand it. But except for Sony, each major still needs to cut a deal with a digital aggregator to allow consumers to redeem the ringtone.

Meanwhile, label profit margins for the format are considered slim. The majors are gambling that the ringle can instill in consumers the mind-set to connect to the Internet via the CD.
Reuters says big retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Amazon will be carrying ringles. They will cost either $5.98 or $6.98 which is far more expensive than it costs to download a single on iTunes. Orbitcast says the music industry "goes mad." Engadget calls it a "hairbrained scheme." Compiler calls the ringle the "Edsel of the recording industry." You get the idea. There isn't a lot of respect out there for the ringle.

    Apple iTunes

The Wall Street Journal and Marie Digby

Most people thought Marie Digby sounded pretty good for an undiscovered artist when she posted videos of herself singing covers of hit songs like "Umbrella" and "Torn" on YouTube. It turns out that she already had been signed by with Hollywood Records (a Disney label) well before her YouTube channel emerged. The Wall Street Journal explains in this article that outs Digby as a signed artist.
What her legions of fans don't realize, however, is that Ms. Digby's career demonstrates something else: that traditional media conglomerates are going to new lengths to take advantage of the Internet's ability to generate word-of-mouth buzz.

Ms. Digby's simple, homemade music videos of her performing popular songs have been viewed more than 2.3 million times on YouTube. Her acoustic-guitar rendition of the R&B hit "Umbrella" has been featured on MTV's program "The Hills" and is played regularly on radio stations in Los Angeles, Sacramento and Portland, Ore. Capping the frenzy, a press release last week from Walt Disney Co.'s Hollywood Records label declared: "Breakthrough YouTube Phenomenon Marie Digby Signs With Hollywood Records."

What the release failed to mention is that Hollywood Records signed Ms. Digby in 2005, 18 months before she became a YouTube phenomenon. Hollywood Records helped devise her Internet strategy, consulted with her on the type of songs she chose to post, and distributed a high-quality studio recording of "Umbrella" to iTunes and radio stations.
Digby probably should have disclosed that she already had a record deal which is something the vast majority YouTube singers do not have. However, Digby explains in a blog post that just because you are signed doesn't mean you are on the path to success and riches.
IS this guy completely insane. You think it's that easy? That you get signed and suddenly everything's taken care of for you!!!?? DO you think that my record label came to my house, my bathroom! and told me what songs to sing and told me that in a matter of weeks i'd be some "youtube" phenom??!?!

Wake up - I am GRATEFUL to be signed but you know what, Labels don't come to your house, hold your hand, and direct youtube videos for you.

I have so many dear friends who were signed to the biggest record labels in the world, made amazing albums and were DROPPED. that's it.....
Apparently, a lot of the people on YouTube haven't read the Wall Street Journal story because there are recent comments on her videos telling her she is good enough get a record contract. They are more right than they know. You can read more discussion of the WSJ-Digby story here, here, here, here and here. And here is an article about Marie Digby back in 2004 when she was one of three finalists remaining in a Pantene Pro-Voice singing contest. (via Buzz Feed).

Below is Digby's cover of Natalie Imbruglia's hit song "Torn." She also has an original song called "Unfold" that is quite good.

Vanessa Hudgens and the Nude Photo

Vanessa HudgensVanessa Hudgens was already becoming a household name thanks her starring role in the insanely popular High School Musical and High School Musical 2 films from Disney. Now the appearance of a nude photo (see NSFW here) has made her name even more well-known. Hudgens quickly apologized for the photograph and Disney quickly backed her apology. ABC says she is earning praise for the way she handled the incident.
The actress admitted last week to posing nude in a photograph, apologized and is now hoping she didn't just ruin her chances to continue with the multimillion-dollar "High School Musical" franchise. It's not the slip-up that has Hollywood talking, it's the way the 18-year-old handled it that's earning her praises and may have just catapulted her career to the next level.

It was something that was never meant to become public. A series of photos of a young Hudgens sans clothing in a bathroom spread across the Internet last week.

"This was a photo, which was taken privately," said a statement from Hudgens' publicist. "It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public."

But, according to a new report from an anonymous source in People magazine, the photo was meant for someone.

That someone is Drake Bell, a 19-year-old actor who is currently starring in "Drake and Josh" on Nickelodeon. Hudgens reportedly sent the photos to Bell two years ago as an admiring fan before she was famous. Bell's representative, Jill Fritzo, said her client was unaware of the photos.
The nudee photo really isn't something that is shocking and it isn't a particularly sexy pose or outfit. The fact that it was meant to be private makes it almost a non-issue. Today's kids have digital cameras to play with and they aren't afraid to use them. "Lapses in judgement" like nude photos are bound to happen. Rumors about who the photo was really meant for have also emerged. The rumors (see here) say the photo wasn't meant for Vanessa's current boyfriend and co-star Zac Efron but for Nickelodeon star Drake Bell. The ABC story says the general consensus is the the nude photo has become an overall winner for Vanessa. Had the photo been more risque or had there been a sex tape then things may have been a lot different and she might have lost Disney's continued support.

Famous Italian Tenor Luciano Pavarotti Has Died

Luciano Pavarotti, a world reknowned Italian tenor, has died at age 71. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer. A quote from Pavarotti on his website says, "I think a life in music is a life beautifully spent and this is what I have devoted my life to."

    Luciano Pavarotti Farewall Message

Bloomberg reports that Pavarotti died at his home in Modena, Italy.
Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian tenor whose clarion lyric voice and performances from concert houses to outdoor stadiums made him a pop icon and the most famous opera singer since Enrico Caruso, has died. He was 71.

Pavarotti, who underwent surgery in New York for pancreatic cancer in 2006, died today at his home in Modena, Italy, according to his agent, Terri Robson. He was hospitalized in Modena in August for a high fever.

"In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness," Robson said in a statement.

The bearded Pavarotti was the king of tenors from the late 1960s through the 1990s. He popularized opera more than any other singer through recordings that made him the best-selling classical artist ever and concerts in parks and stadiums around the world that were televised to millions.

With his huge frame, at times 300 pounds or more, and trademark white handkerchief that he used to wipe his brow, the charismatic Pavarotti became what his former manager Herbert Breslin called "a rock star for people over 30."
Obit entries can be found on the New York Times, The Guardian and BBC. His official website can be found at www.lucianopavarotti.com. Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras have been leading tributes to Pavarotti. There are many Pavarotti videos on YouTube. You can find some with this search. A post on Video Nacho also has links to several popular Pavarotti videos.

New Backstreet Boys Album in October

Backstreet BoysThe Backstreet Boys are hoping there is still some life in their boy band. They have a new album coming out in October. Billboard says the first single from the album called "Inconsolable" can be sampled on the Backstreet Boys' website.
The countdown has begun on the Backstreet Boys' Web site for their Oct. 30 Jive album, which is as-yet-untitled. Group member Nick Carter tells Billboard.com the Boys are still tweaking things in the studio and will cut vocals for a couple more tracks today (Aug. 10).

"We are just putting the finishing touches on it and it sounds incredible," Carter says. The album, whose first single, "Inconsolable," goes to top 40 radio Aug. 27 but can be sampled now on BackstreetBoys.com, will include 11 or 12 songs, Carter speculates.

"We didn't needed to cut that many because I think that we're back into our rhythm of what the group is about," he says. "I felt like 'Never Gone,' the last album we did [in 2005], was basically an experimental album in the sense that we'd been away for four years. We were just trying to find out niche again and I think now we're back in that pocket."
The Backstreet Boys' website also include a giant digital clock counting down to the release of their new album on October 30th. The website says that album will be called Unbreakable.

M.I.A. Video Features Kali and Little Atari-like Characters

MIA Below is the music video for "Jimmy" from M.I.A. It was directed by Nezar Khamal. The video seems to be channeling Bollywood, pop music and the Hindu goddess Kali. The little animated characters in different colors make for a nice Atari-like touch. "Jimmy" is a song of M.I.A.'s recently release album Kala. M.I.A. is the stage name of Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam. Wikipedia says Maya is a vocalist, songwriter, composer, record producer and visual artist of Sri Lankan Tamil origin. M.I.A. was recently touring North America with Gwen Stefani and has recorded with Missy Elliott and Timbaland. They went a little overboard on the flashing colors on M.I.A.'s website but at least the blog is readable.

High School Musical 2 a Smash Hit

High School Music 2 Cast PhotoIf you haven't already heard High School Musical 2 was a huge hit for Disney as expected. Variety says the shows 17.2 million viwers was the "most-watched basic-cable telecast on record."
Disney Channel averaged a whopping 17.2 million viewers for its premiere of "High School Musical 2" on Friday night, making it the most-watched basic-cable telecast on record. It's also the largest aud for any television program on any net in about three months.

The average audience for the premiere Friday, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates, makes it well more than double the 7.7 million who tuned in for the premiere of the original telepic in January 2006.

Of course, the original pic became a phenomenon, with millions of kids and tweens watching it multiple times over the last 19 months, helping build anticipation for its sequel to a fever-pitch. Disney also picked a great date for the weekend launch of the second pic, timed to the when youngsters were prepping for the return to school as well as the start of the summer cool-down at the box office.
Fans of the HSM shows do watch them over and over again. They also watch the music videos over and over again. They also post them repeatedly. Evidence of this is the 100,000+ videos that turn up if you search YouTube for "High School Musical." As we mentioned in an earlier post Disney has even set up a YouTube channel for HSM 2. Here is the music video for the song "All For One."

    Direct video link

It is very likely that Disney will make a third High School Musical film. Variety says HSM 3 will be a theatrical release. The question is whether they will be able to get the stars - Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens - back now that they are becoming household names. The should be able to if they offer the stars enough fun. Besides it is the HSM films that are turning these actors into stars. IMDB already has a listing for HSM3.
