Madonna Enters Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

MadonnaMadonna has entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The VOA reports that she was inducted in her first year of eligibility. Selling over 200 million albums (and still counting) doesn't hurt.
There's no doubt Madonna is one of the most successful rock acts of the past 25 years. With more than 200 million albums sold, Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the very first year of her eligibility. The former dancer made her recording debut in 1982, opening the door to a career that has included acting, writing, producing and directing.

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after their first recording. It's been more than 40 years since fans heard the first song by 1960s British band The Dave Clark Five.

The Dave Clark Five, featuring Dave Clark, Lenny Davidson, Rick Huxley, Denis Payton and lead singer Mike Smith, was at the forefront of the "British Invasion" with one of its biggest hits "Can't You See That She's Mine." The group's induction came less than two weeks after losing Smith to pneumonia at age 64.

According to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation president Joe Peresman, the 23rd annual induction ceremony paid tribute to those who offered a unique contribution to the rock era.
Justin Timberlake made the introduction. He recalled during the introduction that Madonna once injected him with a B-12 shot in his buttocks.

John Mellencamp and Dave Clark Five were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. You can find the Rock Hall's website here.

Hayden Panettiere Likes Rock and Hip-Hop

Hayden Heroes CheerleaderPeople has an article about Heroes star Hayden Panettiere's upcoming album that says she is into pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B.
"Like pop, rock - maybe more of an R&B thing," the 18-year-old actress-activist (and now singer) told PEOPLE Thursday at the Stuart Weitzman Oscar suite in West Hollywood. "I have such eclectic tastes in music. I love rock, hip-hop, I like pop. I love Natasha Bedingfield and [singer-songwriter] Anna Nalick."
People says the album is due out this spring from Hollywood Records. There are a few songs already on Hayden's MySpace page. There haven't been any episodes of Heroes lately but Hayden keeps busy - such as appearing in ads for Candie's with a cute little puppy.

Led Zeppelin Goes Digital

Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin is finally going to be selling its albums online. Warner Music Group confirmed in a statement that Led Zeppelin would be going digital through mobile phones. CNN's Media Biz called Led Zeppelin one of the few remaining holdouts and says there will also be iTunes, Napster and Rhapsody availability in addition to the mobile outlets in Warner Music's statement.
Led Zeppelin, one of the few remaining holdouts in the digital music age, said Monday that it is finally releasing its catalog digitally. The only official announcement from the group's record label, Atlantic Records, which is owned by Warner Music Group (WMG), discussed how songs would be available through the V CAST music service of Verizon Wireless, the mobile phone service owned by Verizon (VZ) and Vodafone (VD).

But a spokesman for Warner Music Group confirmed to me Monday that other reports about Led Zeppelin's music becoming available on other major music stores on Nov. 13 were true. That means people will be able to download "Stairway to Heaven," "Kashmir" and other Zeppelin hits from Apple's (AAPL) iTunes, Napster (NAPS) and RealNetworks' (RNWK) Rhapsody for their MP3 players beginning next month.

This is big news for all the online music stores since Led Zeppelin, according to figures from the Recording Industry Association of America, is the fourth-biggest selling artist in U.S. history. Only The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Garth Brooks have sold more albums.

It's also good news for Warner Music Group since it opens up yet another way for the company to cash in on Zeppelin's back catalog. The big record labels may increasingly find that their livelihood will depend on nostalgia.
Best Week Ever notes that the day Led Zeppelin's music is available on iTunes is the same day their double-Greatest Hits album comes out. Gizmodo writes that the Led Zeppelin digital music will be available at all online music stores. Sounds good but this is 2007 -- it's about time Zeppelin.

2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees

Rock Hall The nine nominations for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced. Here are the nominees:

  • Madonna
  • John Mellencamp
  • Beastie Boys
  • Donna Summer
  • Chic
  • Afrika Bambaataa
  • Leonard Cohen
  • The Dave Clark Five
  • The Ventures

The Associated Press says the diverse list shows how much the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has modified since its early days.
The nominations illustrate how far the Hall of Fame has stretched its definition of rock 'n' roll to incorporate a variety of musical styles.

It's certainly the case with Madonna, the Detroit-area native who burst out of New York dance clubs in the early 1980s with "Holiday" and soon became a pop culture icon. She scored 17 Top Ten hits in the 1980s alone and is due to put out an album next year, working with the likes of Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. The Beastie Boys molded punk rock and rap into the goofy hit "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right to Party." They became critical favorites and are still together, releasing an instrumental album this year.

Indiana’s own Mellencamp can fill a barrel with rock hits like "Hurts So Good," "Pink Houses" and "R.O.C.K. in the USA." Like Chic and the Dave Clark Five, he’s been nominated before without getting into the hall.
Last year the following artists were inducted into the Rock Hall.

  • Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
  • Patti Smith
  • R.E.M.
  • The Ronettes
  • Van Halen

  • Trent Reznor Pitching TV Show Idea

NIN Year ZeroThe Sun is reporting that Nine Inch Nails singer Trent Reznor has written a tv show about the band's latest album (Year Zero) and the group is trying to pitch the idea to tv networks.
It is a concept album about the singer's forecast of the America in 20 years time, and Trevor is currently pitching the idea to TV networks.

He said: "We've got a producer on board and have met with writers.

"We're about to pitch it to the network, so we're a couple of weeks away from meeting all of the main people, and we'll see what happens."
Nine Inch Nails the tv show? Like Trent says, "If it works, it works and if it doesn't, it doesn't." Nine Inch Nails also has an official site on YouTube. There's nothing there about a tv show but here is a video of NIN performing in Stockholm, Sweden.

Van Halen Going Back on Tour

Van Halen Logo Van Halen and David Lee Roth have announced their first tour in 22 years on their website at van-halen.com. Van Halen is best known to most people for their 1984 album which stayed at number one on Billboard's charts for five start weeks. 1984 included the hit songs "Jump, "Panama, "Hot For Teacher" and "I'll Wait."
Tickets for the first Van Halen tour in more than 22 years with David Lee Roth as lead vocalist went on sale this weekend and resulted in immediate sell outs in multiple markets around the country, including Charlotte, Detroit (Palace), 2 shows in Toronto, 2 in Chicago and one in Philadelphia. Tour producer Live Nation immediately added additional shows in Philadelphia (Wachovia Center 10/3) and Detroit (Joe Louis Arena 10/20) which will go on sale this Saturday, August 25th.

An additional stop was also scheduled for Washington, DC's Verizon Center (11/1), extending Van Halen's historic trek to 29 dates in all. Tickets for the Washington, DC date will go on sale this Friday, August 24th. In addition, tickets for the band's October 30th show at Boston's TD Banknorth Garden go on sale this Saturday, August 25th.
SFGate.com's culture blog predicted this even earlier this year. Are people still listening to Van Halen. Yes, they are. They have been able to add tour dates because of strong ticket sales. YouTube shows 12,500 results for a Van Halen search. This video for "Jump" has over 1.6 million views.
